Hey there y'all, what do you think of the Chris Duarte/Bluestone album "396"? I like about 3/4s of it but wished the mix was a bit "brighter" with Toshihiro Sumitomo's guitar playing more prominent. Does anybody know what "H2K3" is by the way? Jet fuel for cars? I've heard some of the "396" material performed live from the recent Japanese tour and it sounds much better than the album (I think). Bad-ass car on the artwork though!!!!

Update: I e-mailed Chris Duarte about the meaning of "H2K3" and here's his reply: "H2K3" means this: the japanese word for fly is Ha, and for mosquito Ka. The boys were outside somewhere and they were swatting at some bugs and laughing about it. then Yoshi wrote this song as a sort of relation to the frenetic energy you expire in swatting at them. So it's an abbreviation of 2 flys and 3 mosquitos: Ha ha, Ka ka ka. There you have it, inquiring minds want to know! - cd

I really enjoy 396. The songwriting is really quite good. Lyrically, I especially like "THE BALLAD OF KOHIMA RIDGE" . It would be very interesting to hear the story behind that one. I agree that the mixing and blending of the two guitars appears to be the real difficulty in producing this project. Mike Varney is no slouch. Perfection seems elusive, live and in the studio. But even so, one of the real tests of a "classic" is when your favorite track seems to alternate from week to week, and when the song that least blows you away upon first play becomes totally stuck in your head later on. The latter is the case with "CHATTAHOOCHEE SIDE", I didn't dig that one at all first time 'round, but now I love it. And that tune has been stuck in my cranium for weeks now. Great stuff.

Chris is incorrect about "H2K3". the japanese word for fly is Hae. So Hae Hae Ka Ka Ka.....

"Hae Hae Ka Ka Ka" is the copy of a TV commercial of an insect spray in Japan.
I like 396 a lot. The balance of each player is very good. Not only the both guitars but also the drums, percussions and bass. It is a great album, but their live performances were better than it.
