I just wanted to share one of the most awesome times of my life with some fellow music lovers that could understand what an amazing experience this was.
I am a huge Crowes fan, so when I heard about this
I was extremely excited. I've missed out on some really special Crowes shows over the years that I would have loved to have gone to, including their tour with Jimmy Page and the Brothers of a Feather shows.
I had tickets in my online cart 3 times the day they went on sale and didn't buy them. I finally decided that this was a once in a lifetime kind of thing and I wasn't going to miss it. By this time Saturday was already sold out for the weekend I was able to go. Luckily they still had tickets for Sunday, so I bought a pair.
Now I had to explain to my fiancee what I had done. She was very understanding because she knows how much I love the Crowes.....and they are actually the reason we are together. She even agreed to this being our honeymoon before the wedding since now it would be difficult to have one after.
Anyway, we waited and waited and finally it came. With the way our vacation worked out, we had decided to drive straight there and then take our time coming back and doing some things along the way (including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland, which is pretty cool).
So we leave Missouri about 4pm Fri. 2/27 and get to our hotel in Kingston, NY (just a few miles outside Woodstock) about 20 hours later around noon on Sat. 2/28. I figured I would be wiped out and had planned on sleeping when we got there. I guess I was just excited because I wasn't ready to sleep. Finally decided to go do a couple things in Woodstock.
We drove by Levon's just to make sure we could find it ok. I wish I would have thought to take pictures of The Barn because it was too dark when we got there on Sunday night for the show.
Then I wanted to go to Big Pink. It was pretty cool standing there and seeing the place that The Band and Bob Dylan had recorded at so long ago.
After that we went to the Black Bear Tavern in Woodstock and briefly met a few people from the Black Crowes messageboard. They have some great food at that place, best burger I ever had. Now we were getting tired so we headed to the hotel and hit the sack.
The next morning we headed into Woodstock again. Walked around and checked out all the cool shops, bought souvenirs, ate, and kind of wasted the day away. Then we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the show.
Got to Levon's about 5:45 and we were about a quarter mile back in the line of cars. At 6:00 they started letting cars in to park. We got our stickers so we could enter (there were no actual tickets, you were just on the list), parked, and got in line. At 7:00 they started letting everyone inside. Levon's studio only holds about 200 people. We got in and there were maybe 8-10 seats left downstairs (upstairs was mostly standing) and we grabbed 2 seats in the 6th row. I went and got a poster and t-shirts while my fiancee saved our seats, then settled in and waited for the show.
At 8:00 the Crowes came out. Again, I have to say this was one of the most awesome experiences of my life and definitely the top musical experience I have ever been a part of. They played all new songs, ranging from bluegrass to country to kick-ass rock and roll and even one tune that had a bit of a disco edge to it. We got to see the actual recording process in action. They stopped when they screwed up, talked about it, started over, (a few songs they did 2 or 3 takes of) and they were joking around with each other and the audience. It was an amazing, intimate experience with one of my two favorite bands and great music, I'm glad I didn't let myself miss it.
